Sylvia Gamp’s passion for nature and the wilderness started as a child growing up in Calgary in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. After a
career in insurance, her childhood fascination for the art of the old masters led her to study painting at ACAD, (Alberta University of the Arts), through professional level workshops and under the mentorship of several professional artists. She has further honed her craft during retreats with local and international artists where she developed her focus and style.
Sylvia is a juried member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, the Leighton Art Centre, the Calgary Community Painters Society, and shows her work with other groups and galleries. Her work can be found in numerous private collections.
Her frequent visits to the forests and mountains spawned her love of wild places and inspire Sylvia to paint her recollection of these moments. Painting enables her to give visual expression to her experiences and ideas. Whether hiking or skiing, she is often inspired the interplay of light and shadow, how this affects color, and reflections in water. Through her use of
rhythm, color, shape, and line, Sylvia seeks to create visually exciting and emotionally resonant paintings. Sylvia also has a fascination for experimenting with unconventional materials which she uses to create her work. By painting the beauty of nature, she hopes to evoke similar feelings of passion, awe and serenity in the viewer.
In addition to the landscape, Sylvia also paints abstract works, the figure, and urban vignettes. More recently, Sylvia is exploring landscape abstraction as well as issues of sustainability and the impact that our lifestyle has on the environment.
