Gerry spent most of his early career in the print and allied trades as a commercial artist, screen printer and sign writer. Art was a passion from a very early age, so he took every opportunity to develop his skills, taking courses in drawing and fine art painting. He had the opportunity to attend the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, Ireland, as a mature student, and graduated with a B.A. degree in Art and Design Education. He worked briefly in the Irish education system before immigrating to Canada with his wife and three sons in 2001.
He settled in Calgary and started a house painting company which gives him the freedom and flexibility to continue his growth as a plein air painter. He is actively involved in the Calgary art community as a painter and instructor, and as a member of the long-established Calgary Sketch Club. He continues to learn by attending workshops with highly regarded plein air painters such as Frank Serrano, Randall Sexton and, recently, Marc Hanson. He has participated in many shows and his paintings hang in homes and private collections in Ireland, England, Spain, the United States, and Canada.
Gerry is a prolific, all season, plein air painter who treks with his easel and supplies through all terrain in search of that perfect spot that begs to be painted. Painting from life is an integral part of his art discipline, be it in the mountains, in local parks, or in a back lane. Gerry is fascinated by the play of light on his subject and is anxious to capture its magic. The power of this experience flows into his studio work as he further explores the indelible influence of nature as his greatest inspiration. Through this process, he has the opportunity to share what he sees with others. Gerry feels the mission of the artist is to explore the essence of a scene and portray all its wonders and intricacies so viewers can experience them for themselves. “When someone is able to perfectly express, in paint, the uniqueness of a given moment outdoors, it is something of a miracle.” (John Morra, “Plein Air is done from life,” John Morra Painting (Blog), February 12, 2018, https://johnmorrapainting.com/blog) Gerry’s style and technique are unique, honed from years of observation and study. He paints landscapes as they are. His ability and the integrity of his work are appreciated by mentors and peers alike. His love and passion for his craft show in every brushstroke, as does the excitement with which he approaches each and every piece. Gerry is truly grateful for the gift that art has been in his life.
