I am a lifelong artist who has recently experienced a “sea change” in my abstract art practice. The transformation has been startling.
My earlier style is a freely expressed, meditative response to the world. I create large acrylic and mixed media paintings that mirror the many layers of human experience, both higher states and those that we seek to rise above. Some states are represented by thin, bright lines and shapes, while others are thick and bold. These layers of colour are juxtaposed on a surface of softly stained, unprimed canvas.
Since November 2021, I have moved from painting intuitively and allowing the paint to dictate the outcome, to a very precise, organic style where I control the outcome completely. Some paintings are rectangular, some are round, all are large. Layers are transformed into meticulous, intertwined, sinuous shapes that prompt reflection on the past and present. I call this series of works “Oracles of Time.”
My paintings stir movement. People physically engage with them. They turn their heads, arch and bend their bodies to find the best entry point, sometimes walking so close to the canvas that their nose is a mere inch or two away, allowing themselves to be physically surrounded by my marks and colours. Other times they stand far back, taking in the entirety of the canvas. I am inspired when people connect with my art in this way.
Through my artistic practice I continue to seek, question, ponder, and explore the mystery of the world around me. My paintings invite viewers, both singularly and as a community, to reconsider our layered experiences of time, from the past, through the present, and speculatively into the future.
