Painting has been my passion. “It’s all about passion” I say. Creating a piece of art evokes spirituality in me, it gives me personal satisfaction. Whenever I apply paint strokes to the canvas, it doesn’t matter how good or bad it turns out to be, it is still me – my paintings reflect the mood I am in. If the end result doesn’t satisfy me, so be it; I’ll try again.
I was born and raised in Tanzania, East Africa. I finished my education in Kenya and England, and returned to Tanzania. However, I had to leave Tanzania because of political situation and went to Kuwait where I lived for a couple of years before emigrating to Canada.
Painting was never on the radar. When I first came to Canada, I never thought I’d resort to painting. It was only after I left active work force that I realized – hmmmm! now what? Have to do something, not for money but at least for my sanity. Back in Tanzania my art skills amounted to doodling and drawing apples and pears and houses. A friend encouraged me to take some art classes and I got hooked! That is my hobby now. I am always looking at the open sky and its colours and contours at different times of the day and seasons; I get all excited when I see a beautiful landscape and want to splash colours on my canvas right away, but I have learnt to be patient. I love bold vibrant colours and will simply add a mountain, a stream or a tree here and there, as long as it pleases the eyes. Painting is simply an impression of reality, and I suppose that is why I enjoy it. I don’t have to be exact – just pleasing to the eye.
My love for art is depicted in my eagerness to soak up as much as I can from attending classes and various workshops by renowned artists such as Neil Patterson, Mike Svob, John Poone, Rick Berg, Ingrid Christensen and many more. However, I believe it has to be in you – I mean an artistic inclination – to enjoy it.
My love for excitement and adventure has led me to travel extensively around the world and my love for open air and nature has led me to trek up mountains in various countries. I am always learning new ways and painting techniques. I love landscapes but also do floral and abstract. My work has found its way into corporate offices and private homes. I also donate my work to various charities and other worthwhile causes. I am an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, Calgary Sketch Club and the Leighton Art Centre.
