Jeanne Stangeland (nee Duerr) was born in Humboldt, Saskatchewan and raised on a farm just outside the city. She started formal training in Life Drawing and Abstract Sculpture in 1974 at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. Jeanne moved to Alberta in the late 1970’s and continued studying art in various media. She began her career as an artist in Alberta with her animal and flora work and later her figurative studies.

Known for her work in pastel, watercolor, acrylic and oil, Jeanne continues to use different approaches to subject and style in her drawings and paintings. Much of her work is focused on process and incorporates theoretical ideas and concepts pertaining to meditation, prayer and blood line. Her recent work at the University of Calgary focused on Sculptural Installation.

Jeanne studied sculpture at the Alberta College of Art and Design, using clay, plaster, cement and various other materials. She took several courses at St. Mary’s College prior to admittance as a full time student to the University of Calgary. In 2008 Jeanne graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Honours Art degree from the University of Calgary.

Jeanne mentors and critiques work done by both professional artists and art students. Her work has sold to Canadian, American, Japanese, Chinese and British destinations. She is currently working out of her studio in the Czech Republic on a series of paintings called ‘The Unexpected’ and is researching European Contemporary art.
